The Kailua Bay Men’s Iron

Kailua Canoe Club Presents The 16th ANNUAL KAILUA BAY MEN’S IRON CHALLENGE

The Kailua Bay Challenge can be a very challenging and grueling race depending on the weather conditions.  It is called an “Iron” race because there are no crew changes in the six man crews during the 9.5 mile short course and the 13.5 mile long course races. Previous years races have drawn 45 to 50 six man entries or 270 to 300 paddlers and around 400 spectators.

While the event is one of Kailua Canoe Club’s main fundraiser, it is also put on to perpetuate the ancient sport of Hawaiian outrigger canoe racing in the spirit of fun and fellowship within the island community, while being very exciting and competitive.  After the race, all crews, race officials, and supporters get together for lunch, refreshments, music and awards.  Awards are given to the 1st, 2nd & 3rd place finishers in each of the divisions.
